How To Measure Window Size

March 18, 2026 by Bestoff Windows Inc.
  • Measure Window Width

Measure the opening between the window jambs

  • Measure Window Height

Measure the opening from the top of the frame down to the windowsill

  • Calculate United Inches

Add your window’s width and height

At Bestoff Windows, we’re committed to making your window replacement project as smooth and transparent as possible. One of the best ways to get started quickly is by utilizing our free online estimate tool.

While we will always perform our own precision measurements before ordering any custom-made vinyl windows, getting rough “initial” numbers allows us to give you an accurate price range almost instantly.

Here is a simple, step-by-step guide on how to measure your windows for an online quote.

What You’ll Need

  • A reliable metal tape measure (avoid fabric tapes, as they stretch)
  • Paper and a pen/pencil
  • A stepladder (if necessary for tall windows)

Step 1: Measure the Width

You want to measure the opening between the window jambs.

  1. Open the window (if possible) to access the main frame.
  2. Measure the horizontal distance from the inside of the jamb on the left side to the inside of the jamb on the right side.
  3. Important: Take this measurement in three places: the top, the middle, and the bottom of the window opening. Use the smallest of these three numbers for your width measurement.

Step 2: Measure the Height

Next, you will measure the opening from the top of the frame down to the windowsill.

  1. Measure the vertical distance from the highest point of the window opening (called the head jamb) down to the windowsill (the bottom horizontal part of the frame).
  2. Important: Take this measurement in three places: the far left, the middle, and the far right. Use the smallest of these three numbers for your height measurement.

Helpful Tips for Online Estimates

  • Measure in Inches: For our online quote tool, please record all measurements in inches.
  • Width First: Always record your measurements in the standard format: Width x Height.
  • Keep it Simple: For an online quote, rounding to the nearest full inch is perfectly acceptable. If a measurement is 341/4 inches, rounding down to 34 inches or up to 35 inches is fine for a rough estimate.
  • Measure the Opening, Not the Glass: Ensure you are measuring the entire space where the window sits, including the frame—not just the visible glass area.

Prefer Not to Measure? Let Us Handle It!

We understand that sometimes measuring windows isn’t feasible. You might have hard-to-reach second-story windows, or you might simply prefer having a professional handle it.

If you cannot measure your windows or prefer not to, Bestoff Windows happily offers free, no-obligation on-site estimates.

We will send one of our estimator to your home to take precision measurements of every window, assess your specific needs, and provide you with a comprehensive, accurate quote on the spot.

Whether you prefer the speed of an online estimate or the precision of an in-person consultation, Bestoff Windows is ready to help you upgrade your home. Contact us today!
